Even though everyone has an individual position, we can define three general types of sleeping positions: people are either lying on their stomachs, their backs, or on their sides. Each of these sleeping positions has physical benefits and disadvantages.

Sleeping on your back is generally very healthy for your spine and also helps your skin. The most important drawback however is, that sleeping on your back can cause snoring. If you are a person that tends to snore you might want to think about sleeping in a different position so your family members can get some sleep as well! Sleeping on the side is the most popular choice but comes with its own set of pros and cons. This position’s main advantage is the improved circulation and digestive function of your gastrointestinal tract. It also helps pregnant women. The main downside is that your weight is not evenly distributed, which might cause pain in your legs and arms. Sleeping on your stomach helps with snoring and generally benefits your breathing, which might be helpful in case you are ill. Unfortunately, this position also tends to cause pain and tension in your neck area and might also be harmful to your spine.
